2017-04-25

Abiding by spirits of following rules, keeping innovating and leading tomorrow, PKU is striving to become a Great University, one goal of which needs to be achieved by its various disciplines’ development. The most important and fundamental work are finding out the development details and competitiveness of each discipline, and identifying the gaps between PKU and domestic and foreign institutions.

PKU Library has many years’ accumulation of multidimensional bibliometrics and information analysis. With vast amounts of literature resources and efficient analysis tools, Peking University Library gives 44 academic competitiveness reports for PKU’s class-one doctoral disciplines to provide suggestions for PKU’s academic development.

PKU’s academic competitiveness reports analyze each discipline’s development by comparing PKU and 17 other universities at home and abroad. With each report, the steps are as follows:

Firstly, after numerous investigations and discussions with the members from PKU’s Office of Academic Development, the evaluation index system of discipline competitiveness is designed and a multi-dimensional evaluation model is built.

Secondly, a rich supply of data and information is gained, including papers, books, funds, awards, discipline and talent development situation, international rankings, performances in top journals, etc. Data cleaning and specification are then following according to our subject classification and the evaluation index system.

Thirdly, by a complete data analysis process and many analysis tools, the analysis work begins and provides visual displays.

Finally, after finishing reports, we seek advice from subject experts on how to refine and develop them, so that we can provide discipline planning and decision-making for PKU.

PKU Library have finished and published 9 reports since April in 2017, such as in economics, sociology, education, archaeology, philosophy, mathematics, psychology, computer science and technology, environmental science and engineering.
